Floyd Mayweather Hit With Felony Charges Over Alleged $200K AP Watch Check Scheme In Las Vegas
Boxing legend Floyd Mayweather is facing serious legal trouble in Las Vegas after being charged with felony theft and intent to defraud in connection with the purchase of a luxury Audemars Piguet watch.
According to court documents, Mayweather is accused of purchasing a $200,000 timepiece from Las Vegas jewelry store Gold and Beyond in December 2024 using a check that allegedly could not be covered by the account it was drawn from.
Prosecutors claim the undefeated boxing champion knowingly used a Wells Fargo check despite allegedly having insufficient funds, property, or credit available to complete the purchase.
The complaint alleges that Mayweather took possession of the luxury watch and never made good on the payment, leading authorities to pursue criminal charges.
A court hearing was held Monday, where Mayweather appeared through his legal representatives.
If convicted, the consequences could be significant. The felony theft charge reportedly carries a potential sentence ranging from one to twenty years in prison, while the intent to defraud charge could add an additional one to four years behind bars.
An attorney representing Gold and Beyond told ESPN that the jewelry store spent months attempting to resolve the matter privately before seeking legal action.
“The reason for the delay is that my guy trusted Mayweather and was trying to give him every opportunity to make good on that,” attorney Marc Cook said. “And it got to the point where he wasn’t getting responses and wasn’t getting money for a watch that Mayweather had for well over a year.”
The legal battle comes amid growing questions about Mayweather’s financial situation. Recent reports indicate the former champion is involved in multiple high-profile lawsuits and is allegedly dealing with millions of dollars in unpaid tax obligations.
Despite the mounting legal issues, Mayweather is still expected to travel overseas for an upcoming exhibition bout against Greek fighter Mike Zambidis later this month.
