JAY-Z Takes Over the Met for Star-Studded JAY-Z IN 8 Premiere

Thirty years after Reasonable Doubt introduced the world to one of hip-hop’s most influential voices, JAY-Z celebrated another chapter of his legacy Sunday night in New York City.

The rap mogul hosted the world premiere of his forthcoming HBO documentary series, JAY-Z IN 8, on Sept. 13 at New York’s Metropolitan Opera House, turning the occasion into a star-studded, black-tie celebration of music, culture and three decades of evolution.

JAY-Z hit the red carpet in a sharp tuxedo as several familiar faces from music, entertainment and fashion arrived to support the Brooklyn icon. Fat Joe, DJ Khaled, Yo Gotti, Charlamagne Tha God, Winnie Harlow and Gunna were among the guests in attendance, along with Rick Rubin, JAY-Z’s longtime collaborator and one of the central figures featured in the documentary.

Beyoncé Knowles-Carter and Tina Knowles were also in attendance, quietly entering the theater shortly before the screening began.

The eight-part JAY-Z IN 8 gives audiences an intimate look inside the mind and career of JAY-Z through candid conversations with Rubin. The series explores the music, lyrics, experiences and creative experimentation that helped shape his journey from Brooklyn rapper to global cultural force.

A trailer released in August offered fans an early glimpse into the reflective nature of the project. JAY-Z recalls becoming obsessed with writing at around 9 years old, setting the stage for a career that would eventually produce one of hip-hop’s most celebrated catalogs.

The documentary revisits music spanning several eras, including Reasonable Doubt, The Blueprint, The Black Album, American Gangster, Watch the Throne, 4:44, Vol. 3… Life and Times of S. Carter and The Dynasty: Roc La Familia.

The premiere arrives during a particularly reflective year for JAY-Z as he celebrates the 30th anniversary of his 1996 debut, Reasonable Doubt. He recently wrapped the European leg of his “JAY-Z 30” concert series, including a massive Sept. 10 performance at Stade de France in Paris featuring appearances from Pharrell Williams and Justin Timberlake.

The celebration isn’t over yet. JAY-Z is scheduled to bring the concert series to Los Angeles for two additional performances on Oct. 23 and Oct. 24.

Three decades after Reasonable Doubt, JAY-Z isn’t simply looking back at the career he built — he’s documenting the mind, moments and music that helped change hip-hop forever.
