JAY-Z is opening the book on his legendary career in a major new way.

HBO Max has announced JAY-Z in 8, an upcoming eight-part documentary series featuring the hip-hop icon in conversation with legendary producer Rick Rubin. The series is set to premiere September 18, giving viewers a deeper look into the mind, journey and legacy of one of music’s most influential figures.

The announcement came with a simple message — “H to the O.V.” — alongside black-and-white footage of JAY-Z and Rubin together.

With a career spanning nearly three decades, JAY-Z’s impact extends far beyond music. From building Roc-A-Fella Records and delivering classic albums to expanding his influence across business, entertainment, sports and culture, Shawn “JAY-Z” Carter has created a blueprint that continues to influence generations.

Pairing him with Rubin makes the upcoming series even more interesting. Known for conversations that dig beneath the surface of an artist’s creative process, Rubin could give audiences access to a side of JAY-Z that we rarely get to see.

Eight episodes also signals that this won’t simply be a quick career retrospective. There’s a lot of ground to cover — the music, the business moves, the evolution, the cultural impact and the man behind one of hip-hop’s biggest legacies.
