EXCLUSIVE: Mecca Reflects on ‘Feelin’ It,’ Nearly 30 Years of Hip-Hop History and Her Full-Circle Moment With Jay-Z
Nearly three decades after her voice became part of one of hip-hop’s most enduring records, Mecca is finally telling the story behind the moment — in her own words.
For generations of hip-hop fans, “Feelin’ It” remains instantly recognizable. Featured on Jay-Z’s 1996 debut album Reasonable Doubt, the record has survived changing eras, shifting sounds and generations of listeners to become a lasting piece of hip-hop history.
But behind the familiar voice was a young woman stepping into a recording studio for the first time, unaware that the moment would follow her for decades.
Now, with Feelin’ It: A Hip Hop Memoir, Mecca is reclaiming that history while revealing the personal journey that existed before and after the record.
In an exclusive conversation with Prince Carter, Mecca opens up about finally telling her story, watching hip-hop evolve, the importance of authenticity, and the extraordinary full-circle moment that brought her back alongside Jay-Z at Yankee Stadium nearly 30 years later.

The Woman Behind the Voice
For Mecca, writing her memoir was about more than documenting a famous recording session. It was about giving readers access to the woman whose life has often been reduced to one legendary musical moment.
“For nearly three decades, millions of people have known my voice before they ever knew my name,” Mecca tells Prince Carter. “They know ‘Feelin’ It’ as a classic, but they don’t know the young woman behind it — the dreams, the sacrifices, the disappointments, the victories, and the faith that carried me through every season of my life.”
That realization ultimately pushed her to put her own history on the page.
“I reached a point where I realized that if I didn’t tell my story, it would either never be told or someone else would tell it without the heart, honesty, and perspective that only I could bring to it.”
The memoir, she explains, expands the story far beyond the song that introduced her voice to millions.
“Feelin’ It: A Hip Hop Memoir isn’t just the story of making a classic record. It’s the story of everything that led me to that microphone and everything I discovered about myself along the way.”
At the center of that journey are themes of ambition, resilience and faith — particularly the ability to keep moving when life takes an unexpected direction.
“It’s about the courage to pursue a dream, the resilience to keep going when life doesn’t unfold the way you expected, and the faith to believe that purpose is still at work — even when you can’t yet see where it’s leading.”
From a Teenage Recording Session to Hip-Hop History
When Mecca originally recorded “Feelin’ It,” she had no way of knowing that listeners would still be singing the song nearly 30 years later.
“When I recorded ‘Feelin’ It,’ I was just a teenager doing what I loved,” she recalls. “You always hope people connect with the music, but you never know what kind of life a song will take on.”
The song did, indeed, take on a life of its own.
Decades later, “Feelin’ It” remains connected to the legacy of Reasonable Doubt and an era that helped shape Jay-Z’s ascent into one of hip-hop’s defining figures. For Mecca, watching audiences continue to embrace the song has given the record an even deeper meaning.
“Nearly 30 years later, hearing people still sing every word is one of the greatest reminders that music has a life far beyond the moment it’s created.”
But perhaps the most remarkable chapter of Mecca’s story arrived only recently.
While writing her memoir, she contemplated what it would mean to one day share a stage with Jay-Z.
In the book, she wrote: “Sharing that stage would not be a gesture of nostalgia. It would be an affirmation of legacy.”
At the time, the words were simply an expression of how she viewed the significance of the record.
Then life caught up with the page.
After the memoir was completed, Mecca joined Jay-Z at Yankee Stadium and performed “Feelin’ It” alongside him live for the first time.
“As I walked onto that stage, I felt an overwhelming sense of gratitude,” she says. “It felt like every chapter of my life had quietly been leading to that moment.”
What could easily have been viewed simply as a celebration of hip-hop nostalgia became something much more personal.
“Sharing that stage with Jay-Z wasn’t just about celebrating our classic record — it truly felt like an affirmation of legacy,” Mecca says. “Sometimes life has a way of turning the words we write into moments we get to live.”

Mecca has witnessed hip-hop transform from an emerging cultural force into a global industry capable of influencing music, fashion, entertainment, business and popular culture.
Yet despite the evolution, she believes the foundation remains the same.
“At its heart, hip-hop has always been about storytelling,” she explains. “It’s about taking your truth — whether it’s struggle, success, joy, or pain — and giving it a voice.”
For Mecca, that commitment to truth is precisely why the culture continues to connect with new generations.
“That’s what built this culture, and I believe that’s what has allowed it to resonate with people across generations.”
What has dramatically changed, however, is who gets access to an audience.
“When I came into the industry, there were gatekeepers. Today an artist can reach millions with a phone and a social media account.”
The democratization of music has created opportunities that artists of earlier eras simply did not have, but Mecca believes that freedom comes with a different challenge: standing out in an increasingly crowded marketplace.
“That’s an incredible opportunity, but it also means artists have to work even harder to rise above the noise,” she says.
Her advice ultimately comes back to the same quality that helped hip-hop become a global force in the first place.
“Trends come and go, but authenticity never goes out of style. Genuine stories and real human connection are still what create lasting legacies.”
Purpose Doesn’t Have an Expiration Date
If there is one idea Mecca hopes readers carry with them after finishing her memoir, it extends far beyond hip-hop.
“I hope readers walk away believing that purpose doesn’t have an expiration date,” she says. “Life has a way of coming full circle in ways that are bigger than anything we could have imagined.”
For Mecca, there was never a question of whether “Feelin’ It” mattered. The record’s longevity had already answered that.
What she could not predict was how her own relationship with that legacy would continue evolving decades later.

“One of the themes throughout Feelin’ It: A Hip Hop Memoir is believing that our greatest moments don’t always happen when we expect them to,” she explains. “I wrote about living with faith and leaving room for God to do what only God can do.”
Then came Yankee Stadium.
“After the book was finished, I found myself standing on the stage at Yankee Stadium performing ‘Feelin’ It’ live with Jay-Z for the very first time,” she says. “I couldn’t have written a more fitting next chapter if I had tried.”
It’s difficult to imagine a more literal example of life coming full circle.
A teenager walks into a recording studio for the first time. Her voice becomes embedded in a record that survives for three decades. Years later, she writes her own story and reflects on what it would mean to stand beside Jay-Z and celebrate that history together.
Then she gets to live the very moment she had already put into words.
And on her birthday, Mecca’s story carries an even more fitting reminder: legacy isn’t always defined by how quickly something happens. Sometimes its meaning becomes clearer with time.
“That’s what I hope readers carry with them after they turn the final page: never stop believing in your own journey,” Mecca says. “Some of life’s greatest moments can’t be planned — they can only be lived.”
And perhaps the final line of her answer says it best:
“Sometimes the dream you think has already reached its peak is only preparing you for an even greater encore.”
