JASMINE GUY ANNOUNCES NEW MEMOIR ‘A DIFFERENT GIRL,’ ARRIVING FEBRUARY 2027

The acclaimed actress, dancer, singer and director has announced A Different Girl, a new memoir set to arrive in February 2027. The forthcoming book, created with her daughter Imani Guy Duckette, will give readers a more personal look at the woman behind one of television’s most recognizable and influential characters.

For generations of viewers, Guy remains synonymous with Whitley Gilbert, the stylish, outspoken and unforgettable Southern belle she portrayed on the groundbreaking sitcom A Different World. The role transformed Guy into a television icon and helped cement the series as an enduring piece of Black pop-culture history.

But the title A Different Girl signals a story that extends far beyond Whitley.

Guy’s career has spanned decades across television, film, theater, music and dance, allowing her to build a body of work far greater than any single character. From her early years as a dancer to becoming an award-winning actress and later stepping behind the scenes as a director, her journey reflects the evolution of a multifaceted Black woman navigating Hollywood while maintaining her own identity.

The memoir also arrives during a period of renewed appreciation for A Different World and its cultural impact. The series helped redefine how young Black Americans were portrayed on television, placing college life, relationships, friendship, activism and Black excellence at the center of mainstream entertainment.

Guy’s Whitley Gilbert became particularly significant. Fashionable, complicated, hilarious and deeply human, Whitley was allowed to evolve before audiences — making her one of the defining television characters of her era.

Now, decades later, Guy is turning the focus from the character audiences know to the woman who brought her to life.

The involvement of her daughter, Imani Guy Duckette, adds another layer to the project, making A Different Girl not simply a reflection on fame and career, but potentially a conversation between generations about family, womanhood, legacy and the experiences that shaped Guy away from the cameras.

For longtime fans, the memoir offers an opportunity to discover the chapters of Jasmine Guy’s life that television could never fully show.
