Nearly 30 Years Later: Duane “Keffe D” Davis Found Guilty of Murder in the Killing of Tupac Shakur
Nearly three decades after Tupac Shakur’s fatal shooting sent shockwaves through hip-hop, a Las Vegas jury has delivered the case’s first conviction.
Duane “Keffe D” Davis was found guilty of first-degree murder with a deadly weapon for his role in orchestrating the September 1996 drive-by shooting that claimed the life of the 25-year-old rap icon. Prosecutors maintained that Davis helped organize the retaliatory attack and supplied the firearm, even though he was not accused of pulling the trigger.
The prosecution’s case relied heavily on statements Davis made over the years in interviews, police conversations and his 2019 memoir. His defense argued that those accounts were exaggerated for attention and financial gain, but the jury reached its verdict after nearly three hours of deliberation. Davis plans to appeal and faces a potential life sentence, with sentencing scheduled for October 13. Reuters

Tupac was shot on September 7, 1996, while riding in a vehicle near the Las Vegas Strip. He died six days later, leaving behind a musical and cultural legacy that has only grown with time.
Although no verdict can restore the life that was lost, the conviction marks a defining moment in one of music history’s most haunting and heavily debated cases. After 30 years of unanswered questions, the legal system has finally held someone accountable for the killing of Tupac Shakur.
