K. Michelle Shuts Down Interviewer’s Country Music Doubts and Declares Her Place at 2025 CMA Fest

At this year’s 2025 CMA Fest, K. Michelle didn’t just take the stage — she made a powerful statement about identity, authenticity, and long-overdue recognition in country music.

During the “CMA Fest: American Songwriter” spotlight segment, the Memphis-born singer shut down doubts about her country roots when an interviewer questioned her genre credibility.

“I did grow up in country music. You do this all the time,” she said, visibly frustrated. “I’m from Memphis, Tennessee. I got a scholarship for yodeling — that’s how I paid for college.”

K. Michelle’s passion was palpable. She wasn’t trying to earn a seat at the table — she was reminding people she’s always belonged there. Despite building a successful career in R&B, Michelle has long had her sights set on country — a genre she says reflects her truest self.

“It was never my second option,” she told EBONY. “Country music was always my first because that’s who I am.”

That sense of identity has come with resistance. Throughout her journey, Michelle has faced repeated pushback — particularly because she’s a Black woman in a genre that historically hasn’t welcomed many.

“I was told I could not sing country music because I was Black, but it was something I had always been doing,” she said. “I didn’t fly here. I grew here.”

Years ago, Michelle covered The Judds’ “Love Can Build a Bridge,” and what started as a passion project turned into a profound moment of validation when the Judd family invited her to perform the song as a tribute to the late Naomi Judd.

That rare endorsement cemented her country journey, and now, K. Michelle is preparing to release her first full-length country album — a raw, emotional, and roots-heavy project drawing on traditional country and bluegrass influences.

She named Toby Keith, Alison Krauss, and The Judds among her inspirations, and promises the album will be a bold return to the core of country storytelling.

While mainstream country continues to evolve with pop and genre fusion, K. Michelle is carving her own lane — grounded in authenticity, rich in tradition, and unapologetically herself.

Whether the industry is ready or not, K. Michelle is here — and she’s not asking for permission.
