Erykah Badu & Lauryn Hill Unite for a Historic Portrait Celebrating Two Cultural Icons

Erykah Badu and Lauryn Hill have come together for a striking new portrait series with Outlander Magazine, marking what the publication describes as the first time the two music icons have been photographed together on a set.

Captured in timeless black-and-white, the images feel less like a traditional editorial shoot and more like a cultural portrait. Hill and Badu stand together as two women whose artistry helped reshape the possibilities of R&B, hip-hop, soul and Black creative expression.

The collaboration arrives following their appearance at the Diaspora Calling! Festival, with photographer and creative director Elliot Hensford capturing the historic pairing shortly after their performance.

For decades, Badu and Hill have occupied singular spaces in music. Hill’s groundbreaking work with the Fugees and The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill established her as one of her generation’s most influential voices, while Badu became a defining architect of neo-soul through her music, fashion, spirituality and unmistakable visual identity.

But what makes these photographs particularly powerful is what they represent: two women who helped define a golden era standing together decades later, still influencing the culture they helped create.

The styling only strengthens that message. Oversized silhouettes, headwraps, layered jewelry and sculptural pieces transform the photographs into portraits that could exist in almost any decade. There’s history in the images, but there’s also something unmistakably contemporary about them.

Outlander described the moment as “pure music history,” and it’s difficult to disagree.
