Reka Robinson of “Single You” Calls Out Entertainment, Media for Glorifying Toxic Relationships
Well, we hear the music, we see the movies and the reality TV shows. So, let’s talk about relationships! In the year 2021, it’s fairly safe to say that current views on dating, marriage, and relationships of any sort for that matter, are quite different than in years past. In today’s era of the Me Too movement, women’s groups continue the push for empowerment, advancement and protections for women, as well as the freedom to express themselves as men have done so freely for ages.Ā
Conversely, polarizing figures like Kevin Samuels have captured the minds and hearts of many men, putting a loudspeaker to the sentiments many have about their interactions with women.Ā The result? More fuel for the trust issues, bickering, bodyĀ shaming, financial abuse, and a laundry list of other things keeping the dysfunctional, transactional, “hit it and quit it” cycle going.
Reka Robinson, who is listed as one of the Top Female Coaches Transforming Lives by Yahoo Finance, recently had something to say about that. The longtime award-winning radio host and the current founder of theĀ Single You AcademyĀ andĀ Single You PodcastĀ coachesĀ women through understanding, āthey are worthy regardless of their relationship statusā and they sure don’t have to meet theĀ standards of men. The passionate pop culture critic says women should be meeting their own standards in life, career and especially in relationships. She goes on to say women need to be asking themselves āwhat do I want?ā then go from there. Plus it’s time the entertainment industry is held accountable for promoting and romanticizing toxic relationships.Ā
The trend of lyrics on cheating, using people for money and sex, getting flewed out, and “situationships” has her saying enough! It’s also why she is single (until proven she shouldnāt be) and encouraging other women to embrace their singleness and recognize that men don’t deserve them until they, well…. man up! In fairness, she also urges broken women to get themselves together before considering entering a relationship themselves.
“We keep on looking at the Cardi B and Offsets, the Beyonce and Jay-Z’s, and listening to people like Derrick Jaxn and Kevin Samuels⦠for why? Relationships arenāt a one-size-fits-all. Itās truly possible to not have to go through B.S. in order to have the relationship you dream of.Ā Love & Hip HopĀ doesnāt have to dictate the kind of relationship you have. A whole conversation is missing here. Where is the accountability and where are theĀ steps?,”Ā she said.Ā “You don’t just become a doctor, you go to med school. With Everything else in life you get training, you get mentorship, but not when it comes to relationships and especially marriage⦠we justĀ wing it? Steps are skipped. We go from dating in high school, no healing afterwards and skip right on to trying to have real healthy relationship or marriages. How well is that working out for us?ā
The certified NLP life coach wants to ask – “Who is Kevin Samuels to you? Why is his opinion weighted so heavy? Why would a woman call in for him to rate her on her worthiness? Then, it’s easy for him to tear a woman down because she isnāt married as if her worth should be weighed by the ring on her finger. If my knowledge serves me correctly, isnāt he single?”
Anyway, if youāre a frustrated single woman who is tired of being loyal to disrespectful men and youāre ready to learn how to set and keep boundaries, Robinson suggests they start with her podcast and visit her website atĀ singleyouacademy.com. Hopefully we’ll start to see some more love and respect (for self) in the air!
