RIP Demond Wilson: ‘Sanford and Son’ Star Who Played Lamont Passes Away at 79

Hollywood has lost a television legend.

Grady Demond Wilson — best known to millions as Lamont Sanford, the quick-witted son of Fred Sanford on NBC’s iconic sitcom Sanford and Son — has passed away at the age of 79.

According to his son, Demond Wilson Jr., the beloved actor was pronounced dead Friday morning at his home in Palm Springs, California. Wilson died from complications related to cancer, though the specific type was not disclosed.

“I loved him. He was a great man,” his son shared.

Wilson rose to fame starring alongside Redd Foxx on Sanford and Son from 1972 to 1977. The show became a cultural staple, with Lamont serving as the level-headed counterbalance to his father’s hilarious schemes and dramatic outbursts. Their on-screen chemistry helped cement the sitcom as one of the most memorable Black television comedies of its era.

Following the show’s success, Wilson continued working steadily in television. He starred as Raymond Ellis in Baby… I’m Back! and later landed a lead role in The New Odd Couple in the early 1980s. While both series were short-lived, they showcased his range beyond the junkyard of Watts.

Wilson also brought his talents to the big screen, notably starring in the 1993 film Me and the Kid. After stepping away from Hollywood for nearly two decades, he returned to acting in 2023 with a role in the drama Eleanor’s Bench, marking a quiet but meaningful comeback.

For many fans, however, he will forever be remembered as Lamont — the son who kept Fred in check and delivered punchlines that still live on in reruns today.

Demond Wilson’s legacy in Black television history is undeniable. He leaves behind a body of work that helped shape sitcom culture for generations.

Rest in power.
