KJ Smith Accidentally Reveals Baby’s Gender During 2025 BET Awards Red Carpet Interview

While attending the 2025 BET Awards at the Peacock Theater, actress KJ Smith unintentionally shared the gender of her and husband Skyh Black’s baby during a red carpet chat with PEOPLE. Dressed glamorously in a flowing green gown, Smith clapped her hand over her mouth in surprise after slipping up “for her” — revealing they’re expecting a baby girl.

Smith, glowing in her third trimester and standing alongside Black, had just been asked about pregnancy cravings. She shared that lasagna and French fries “didn’t sit well with her.” That single “her” moment triggered a priceless reaction—both laughter and shock—leading her husband, in an amused tone, to crack, “She’s been telling me the whole time [to keep the secret]!” 

Smith chalked up the slip to a classic case of “mom brain,” admitting that pregnancy has muddled her memory. Despite both parents-to-be trying hard to keep the gender a surprise, Smith became the one to spill the beans.

Skyh Black’s excitement about becoming a “girl dad” was palpable. In the same red carpet conversation, he expressed how he’d already bought numerous sets of clothes for their baby, joking that Smith is telling him to “stop.” He shared, “To know that I’m going to be a girl dad … I’ve bought so many things from 0‑6 months that she’s telling me to stop. I’m elated!” 

The couple, who met on the set of Sistas and started dating in early 2021, tied the knot in September 2023 in Malibu. They announced the pregnancy during Essence’s May feature, where Smith disclosed her health journey—including fibroids and PCOS—and how meeting Black shifted her perspective on motherhood.

While they’ve already chosen a name, Smith affirmed they’re keeping it under wraps—for now. The pair are eagerly awaiting their daughter’s arrival and preparing for parenthood with love and enthusiasm .
