‘A Different World’ Renewed for Season 2 at Netflix

Hillman College isn’t closing its doors just yet! Netflix has officially renewed its “A Different World” reboot for a second season, bringing another chapter of the beloved HBCU-inspired sitcom to the streaming giant.

The revival picks up decades after the original 1987–1993 NBC series and follows a new generation of students at Hillman College, with the story centered around Deborah, the youngest daughter of fan favorites Dwayne Wayne and Whitley Gilbert.

Season 2 will find Deborah and her classmates returning to campus after a transformative summer and attempting to embrace a “New Year, New Me” mindset. But, as expected at Hillman, leaving the past behind may be easier said than done.

The new season will explore past decisions, uncertain futures, new relationships, changing friendships and deeper questions about purpose — all while the students continue finding themselves in plenty of new drama and mess.

Maleah Joi Moon leads the new generation alongside Alijah Kai, Cornell Young IV, Jordan Aaron Hall, Kennedi Reece and Chibuikem Uche.

The reboot also brought back several familiar faces from the original series, including Jasmine Guy and Kadeem Hardison as Whitley and Dwayne Wayne. Darryl M. Bell, Cree Summer, Ajai Sanders and Jada Pinkett Smith are also among the returning stars.

Felicia Pride serves as creator, showrunner, executive producer and writer, while Debbie Allen, who directed 83 episodes of the original series, returned as director and executive producer.

Pride celebrated the renewal, saying the response from viewers has been validating and expressing excitement about returning to Hillman to continue telling stories that connect with multiple generations.

Allen also celebrated the news, thanking viewers for helping the reboot reach Netflix’s Top 10 worldwide and teasing that the Hillman crew is coming back for another round.

The first season received positive critical attention, with Variety praising the reboot for feeling timely and fresh while still honoring what made the original series so iconic.

Now the question is: What kind of trouble will Deborah and the Hillman crew get into during sophomore year?

One thing is for sure — Hillman College is officially back in session! 🎓🔥
