Virginia State University Shooting: 19-Year-Old Arrested After 5 People Shot Outside Campus Dorm

A 19-year-old man has been arrested in connection with a shooting near Virginia State University that left five people injured early Saturday morning.

According to the Chesterfield Police Department, Camron Harris was taken into custody after officers allegedly found him hiding inside a closet at one of the university’s residence halls in Ettrick, Virginia.

Police say Harris is not a VSU student.

FIVE PEOPLE INJURED

Authorities say the shooting happened outside a residence hall near the university’s Quad Annexes, a cluster of student housing buildings.

Five people — four males and one female ranging in age from 17 to 23 — were injured.

One victim suffered critical injuries, while the other four sustained injuries that were considered non-life-threatening. One of the victims has been identified as a Virginia State University student.

No deaths were reported.

UNIVERSITY PLACED ON LOCKDOWN

Following the shooting, Virginia State University was placed on lockdown as authorities investigated the scene and searched for the suspected shooter.

The lockdown was lifted around 8:20 a.m. Saturday.

Police say investigators secured warrants charging Harris with malicious wounding and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony.

Harris was booked into the Chesterfield County Jail, where his mugshot was taken.

Authorities have not announced a motive, and the investigation remains ongoing.

The shooting has once again raised concerns about safety around college campuses as students, families and the university community process what happened.
