The world is mourning the loss of civil rights legend Jesse Jackson, who has died at the age of 84, according to his family.

In a heartfelt statement released Tuesday morning, Jackson’s family described him as “a servant leader — not only to our family, but to the oppressed, the voiceless, and the overlooked around the world.”

They added, “We shared him with the world, and in return, the world became part of our extended family. His unwavering belief in justice, equality, and love uplifted millions, and we ask you to honor his memory by continuing the fight for the values he lived by.”

Jackson passed away peacefully with loved ones by his side. In recent years, he had been battling progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP), a neurological disorder that affects balance, movement, speech, and swallowing. He had reportedly lived with the condition for more than a decade.

A towering figure in American history, Jackson was a key leader in the civil rights movement and twice ran for President of the United States, breaking barriers and expanding political representation during his historic campaigns in the 1980s. He also founded the Rainbow PUSH Coalition, continuing decades of advocacy focused on economic and social justice.
