Patriots Sign WR Stefon Diggs To A Three-Year $69 Million Deal
Patriots Secure Veteran WR Stefon Diggs on Three-Year, $69 Million Deal
In a major move to bolster their receiving corps, the New England Patriots have signed veteran wide receiver Stefon Diggs to a three-year, $69 million maximum deal, as reported by NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport. The contract marks a significant investment by the Pats, who have struggled to find a consistent playmaker at wide receiver in recent years.
Diggs, who is approximately five months removed from an ACL injury that cut short his first and only season with the Houston Texans, is hoping to return to his previous form. Although his recovery from the serious knee injury is a concern, the Patriots appear confident in his ability to contribute to their offense. Diggs showcased his physical progress by posting workout videos on Instagram, leading to speculation about his readiness for the upcoming season.
The 31-year-old receiver, a four-time Pro Bowler between 2020 and 2023, enjoyed six consecutive 1,000-yard seasons prior to his injury. In 2024, Diggs had 47 receptions for 496 yards and three touchdowns before his injury sidelined him. Despite being on the older side for an NFL wideout and coming off a major injury, Diggs still offers a wealth of experience and skill that could provide a much-needed boost to the Patriots’ offense.
The Patriots, led by head coach Mike Vrabel, are hoping Diggs can be a reliable target for second-year quarterback Drake Maye. With a receiving corps that includes Ja’Lynn Polk, Mack Hollins, Kayshon Boutte, Demario Douglas, and Kendrick Bourne, Diggs brings the experience and playmaking ability that the team has lacked in recent seasons.
New England’s wide receiver struggles have been evident over the last few years. The team has not had a 1,000-yard receiver or a player average over 60 yards per game since Julian Edelman in 2019. Tight end Hunter Henry led the Patriots in receiving yards in 2024 with just 42 yards per game. Adding Diggs to the mix should provide a significant upgrade to a unit that has sorely needed it.
While Houston general manager Nick Caserio had not ruled out bringing Diggs back, the Texans are now focusing on their top wideouts, Nico Collins and Christian Kirk. The recent trade for Kirk likely closed the door on any potential Diggs return.
As Diggs makes the move back to the AFC East, joining his fourth NFL team, the Patriots are hopeful that the veteran receiver can help turn around their passing game, providing a steady option for Maye and solidifying the team’s playoff hopes in 2025.
