Tracee Ellis Ross Takes Her Final Bow in Every Brilliant Thing Following an Emotional Broadway Closing Night

Tracee Ellis Ross has taken her final bow on Broadway.

On Sunday, August 9, the Golden Globe-winning actress concluded her run in Every Brilliant Thing at New York City’s Hudson Theatre, bringing both her 40-performance engagement and the Broadway production itself to an emotional close. Ross joined the production on July 7, marking her highly anticipated Broadway debut and the fulfillment of a longtime career dream. 

Images and videos shared from the final performance captured an emotional Ross standing before the audience as the room rose to celebrate her. In one reposted message, an attendee praised Ross’s ability to “touch the hearts of people,” while another described closing night as an “absolute joy on stage.”

The emotion surrounding the moment was fitting for a production built around finding light in the midst of some of life’s heaviest experiences.

Written by Duncan Macmillan with Jonny Donahoe and directed by Jeremy Herrin and Macmillan, Every Brilliant Thingfollows a narrator who begins compiling a list of the beautiful, funny and seemingly ordinary things that make life worth living while navigating a parent’s depression. The intimate solo production breaks down the traditional barrier between performer and spectator, with audience members becoming active participants throughout the performance. 

For Ross, that intimacy became central to making the role her own.

Rather than simply stepping into a part previously performed during the Broadway engagement by Daniel Radcliffe and Mariska Hargitay, Ross brought elements of her own personality and experiences to the production. She also deliberately avoided watching her predecessors perform the role, allowing herself to develop her own relationship with the material and the audience. 

That choice proved particularly significant in a show where no two performances can be exactly alike. Audience participation, improvisation and spontaneous interactions are woven into the production, requiring its sole performer to remain present and responsive while carrying the emotional weight of the story.

Ross has spent decades building a career across television, film, producing, fashion and beauty, becoming especially beloved for her roles in Girlfriends and black-ish. Yet Broadway represented new territory.

Her arrival at the Hudson Theatre on July 7 checked off what Ross described as a longtime bucket-list ambition. After an intensive rehearsal period, she took command of a demanding solo performance centered on joy, grief, connection and the small moments that can make life feel extraordinary. 

The Broadway production began previews on February 21 and officially opened March 12. Radcliffe originated the role for this Broadway staging before Hargitay took over, followed by Ross for the production’s final stretch. After months at the Hudson Theatre, Every Brilliant Thing officially closed Sunday with Ross at its center. 

And perhaps there could not have been a more appropriate way for Ross to complete her first Broadway experience.

A story about recognizing the brilliant things scattered throughout everyday life ultimately became another brilliant thing in Ross’s own career—a Broadway debut, 40 performances, countless interactions with theatergoers and one final standing ovation.

As the lights came down on Every Brilliant Thing, Ross wasn’t simply closing a production.

She was closing one chapter of her career after proving there are still entirely new stages left for Tracee Ellis Ross to conquer.
