Snoop Dogg’s Story Is Coming to the Big Screen as Kurupt, Nate Dogg, The Lady of Rage and Shante Broadus Roles Are Officially Cast

Universal Pictures is bringing Snoop Dogg’s legendary journey to the big screen—and several pivotal members of his personal and musical family have officially been cast.

According to Deadline, Laya DeLeon Hayes will portray Snoop’s wife, Shante Broadus, while Olly Sholotan has been tapped to play West Coast rapper Kurupt. Corey Champagne will step into the role of the late Nate Dogg, and Jonica Booth will portray Death Row Records powerhouse The Lady of Rage.

The four actors join Outer Banks star Jonathan Daviss, who will lead the film as Snoop Dogg. Together, the growing ensemble will help recreate the relationships, music and defining cultural moments that transformed Calvin Broadus Jr. from a young Long Beach artist into one of entertainment’s most recognizable global figures.

The casting of Shante Broadus is especially significant. Snoop and Shante met as teenagers and married in 1997, years after she witnessed the earliest stages of his career. Their relationship has survived fame, family challenges and the pressures that come with maintaining a marriage in the public eye. Including her perspective gives the film an opportunity to explore the man behind the music—and the woman who stood beside him long before the world knew his name.

The additions of Kurupt, Nate Dogg and The Lady of Rage also signal that the movie will reach beyond Snoop’s individual rise and examine the larger Death Row Records movement that reshaped hip-hop during the 1990s.

Nate Dogg became one of the most influential voices in West Coast rap, bringing his unmistakable melodies to records alongside Snoop, Warren G, Dr. Dre and countless others. Kurupt emerged as one-half of Tha Dogg Pound and became known for his razor-sharp lyricism, while The Lady of Rage commanded attention as one of the label’s most powerful women, delivering a presence that could stand alongside any of her male counterparts.

These artists weren’t simply supporting characters in Snoop’s story. They helped create an era.

The biopic will be directed by Craig Brewer, the filmmaker behind Hustle & Flow and Dolemite Is My Name. Brewer rewrote an original screenplay from Black Panther co-writer Joe Robert Cole. Snoop Dogg is also producing the project alongside Brian Grazer and Death Row Pictures president Sara Ramaker, placing the ownership and telling of his legacy firmly within his own hands.

That involvement matters. Snoop’s life cannot be completely captured through hit records and celebrity milestones alone. His journey includes Long Beach, his introduction to Dr. Dre, the explosive arrival of Doggystyle, the complicated history of Death Row Records and his evolution from one of hip-hop’s most controversial young stars into a rapper, actor, entrepreneur, media personality and beloved cultural institution.

More than three decades after his debut, Snoop has achieved something few artists can claim: he has remained authentically himself while continuously expanding what his name represents.

With each new casting announcement, Universal’s Snoop is beginning to look less like a traditional music biopic and more like a full portrait of an entire cultural movement. If the film gets it right, audiences won’t just witness the making of Snoop Dogg—they’ll experience the family, friendships, losses and legendary music that helped build the West Coast sound.

And judging by the names now joining the cast, the Dogg Pound is officially headed to Hollywood.
