Harlemโ€™s own Max B โ€” born Charly Wingate โ€” is officially a free man. The legendary โ€œWave Godโ€ was released from New Jerseyโ€™s Northern State Prison on November 9, 2025, marking the end of a long chapter in one of hip-hopโ€™s most anticipated comebacks.

Maxโ€™s freedom came just one day after his longtime friend and collaborator French Montanaโ€™s 41st birthday, making the moment even more symbolic. Videos flooding social media show the emotional reunion between the two outside the prison gates โ€” French waiting with open arms as Max walked out to cheers, hugs, and shouts of โ€œThe Wave is back!โ€

Max B had been incarcerated since 2009 after being convicted of aggravated manslaughter in connection with a 2006 robbery-turned-deadly incident. In 2016, his original 75-year sentence was dramatically reduced, paving the way for his eventual release this week.

Now 47, Max B wasted no time reconnecting with fans. Sources close to the Harlem rapper say heโ€™s already booked his first New York performance and plans to dive straight back into the booth โ€” with new music and collaborations reportedly in the works.

French Montana shared a heartfelt post, writing:

Fans and fellow rappers across the industry have celebrated Maxโ€™s release, calling it a major moment for New York hip-hop. Known for his smooth, melodic flow and the creation of the term โ€œwavy,โ€ Max Bโ€™s influence can still be heard in artists from A$AP Mob to Drake.

Now that the Wave God has returned, the streets โ€” and the music game โ€” are watching closely for whatโ€™s next.
