Brian McKnight Breaks His Silence Following Son Niko’s Passing—Slamming His Brother Claude and Niko’s Mother

While many fans hoped the passing of Niko McKnight would inspire unity and healing, the moment quickly spiraled into public tension—especially after Brian McKnight shared a controversial video slamming both his estranged son’s mother and his own brother, Claude McKnight.

Brian and Niko had long been estranged. In the past, the R&B singer made headlines for distancing himself from his biological children, even referring to Niko and his siblings, Brian Jr. and Briana, as “products of sin.” The family rift had become a recurring subject of speculation, but emotions erupted anew following Niko’s untimely death.

In a deeply emotional video—seemingly filmed during a private memorial in Maui with his current wife and their children—Brian McKnight offered his version of events, claiming he and his family had extended help to Niko during his illness, but were allegedly turned away.

“The last time he and I spoke, we offered him all the help we could provide,” McKnight said. “We had the number one oncologist on deck and a team of specialists on standby for private care in our home. He and his mother declined. The door of communication was open and remained open until his death.”

McKnight reserved especially harsh words for Claude McKnight, his brother and founding member of the gospel group Take 6, who had publicly mourned Niko’s passing in a TikTok tribute. Brian labeled Claude’s gesture “tasteless and self-aggrandizing,” accusing him of inserting himself into the narrative and exploiting Niko’s death.

“Instead of letting him pass with respect and dignity, it has turned into a circus—a mockery of a life now lost—making this tragedy into a reality show-type drama,” Brian said in the video. “To the self-proclaimed ‘mama bear,’ may God have mercy on your soul for not allowing him to accept that help or use that line of communication.”

He ended his statement by saying he has found peace through faith, and that he rests in the belief that “God knows the truth and the totality of the whole story.” He emphasized his gratitude for the support of those who “knew the truth from the beginning” and included a Bible verse in the caption:

“2 Corinthians 1:3 – Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and the God of all comfort.”

As emotions continue to run high, Brian McKnight Jr.—Niko’s older brother—took a notably different tone, honoring his late sibling with an emotional tribute, choosing to celebrate Niko’s life rather than dwell on the surrounding family drama.

For many, this tragic loss has now become entangled in a very public—and very painful—family divide. Whether healing can ever truly begin remains to be seen.
