Alijah Arenas Showing Promising Signs of Recovery After Fiery Tesla Crash in Los Angeles

Alijah Arenas, the 18-year-old son of former NBA star Gilbert Arenas, is showing encouraging signs of recovery after surviving a terrifying automobile accident that left his Tesla Cybertruck engulfed in flames and wrapped around a tree.

The crash occurred early Thursday morning on April 24, with police reports suggesting speeding was likely the cause of the wreck. The violent impact not only twisted the vehicle around a tree but also triggered a nearby fire hydrant, sending torrents of water into the Los Angeles streets. To make matters worse, the Cybertruck caught fire—trapping Alijah inside.

Thankfully, bystanders jumped into action and pulled the young basketball star from the burning wreckage before emergency responders arrived. He was rushed to the hospital and placed into an induced coma due to severe smoke inhalation. After about a day and a half, on April 26, Alijah made a pivotal step in his recovery: he opened his eyes and communicated by writing a message on paper. According to his family, his first question was, “Did anyone get hurt?”

While still intubated at the time, his ability to communicate offered hope. In a more recent update, a TMZ Sports report confirmed that Alijah has since walked on his own and spoken with both of his parents, Laura Govan and Gilbert Arenas, by his side. He remains under close hospital observation, with doctors continuing to monitor his condition and conduct additional testing.

However, the road ahead is still uncertain. The family’s representative emphasized that while Alijah’s progress is remarkable, he faces a long recovery due to severe smoke inhalation. Video footage of the aftermath suggests he may have been trapped in the burning vehicle for several minutes, intensifying concerns about lung damage.

Despite the trauma, Alijah escaped without any broken bones or major external injuries. And with several months to go before the 2025–2026 NCAA men’s basketball season, the future USC freshman guard has some time to heal. Depending on his recovery timeline, he may consider redshirting his freshman year to preserve eligibility and return stronger.

While a full timeline for recovery is still unknown, the good news is that his family, friends, and fans have witnessed a miraculous turnaround in just a few days. The Arenas and Govan families continue to request privacy and prayers as Alijah fights his way back toward full health.
