Bill Cosby has broken his silence following the heartbreaking news of Malcolm-Jamal Warner’s passing, expressing deep sorrow and reflecting on the legacy of the actor who famously portrayed Theo Huxtable on The Cosby Show.

As reported, Warner tragically drowned while vacationing with family in Costa Rica, at Playa Cocles — a beach known for dangerous rip currents. He was 54 years old, and his death has been ruled asphyxia by drowning.

In a statement shared by Cosby’s longtime spokesperson Andrew Wyatt, the actor and comedian said he was deeply shaken upon receiving the news, which also resurfaced painful memories of his own son, Ennis Cosby, who was murdered during a failed robbery attempt in 1997.

“Malcolm’s passing took me right back to that day I lost Ennis,” Cosby reportedly said. “The pain of losing a son — biological or chosen — never leaves you.”

Wyatt also revealed that the last time Cosby spoke with Warner, the actor had expressed excitement about an upcoming concert he was involved in, taking place in Minneapolis. “He felt like he was changing the world,” Cosby shared.

Cosby praised Warner’s impact, both on and off screen:

“Malcolm-Jamal Warner made a lasting impact with his life and career that will continue to change the world. Every young man growing up in the projects back in the day wanted to be like Malcolm — smart, confident, and loved by his family. We all wanted a family like the Huxtables.”

Warner, whose portrayal of Theo Huxtable helped define an era of Black excellence and family representation on television, leaves behind a legacy of creativity, activism, and inspiration for generations.
