Sean “Diddy” Combs Sex Trafficking and Racketeering Trial Begins, Jury Of Eight Men And Four Women Have Officially Been Sworn In
On May 12, 2025, music mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs appeared in Manhattan federal court as opening statements commenced in a landmark trial that could determine the rest of his life. Now 55 years old and visibly aged, Combs stands accused of operating his billion-dollar empire as a criminal enterprise, facing five felony counts that include sex trafficking, racketeering, and transportation to engage in prostitution. If convicted, he could face life in prison.
A jury of eight men and four women was finalized earlier that morning, following a week-long selection process slowed by juror concerns about the high-profile nature of the case. The prosecution, led by the Southern District of New York, claims Combs orchestrated a sprawling criminal operation from 2009 to 2024, allegedly involving bribery, arson, kidnapping, and the coercion of women into drug-fueled sexual events, sometimes referred to as “freak offs.”
Central to the case is a 2016 hotel surveillance video allegedly showing Combs violently assaulting his ex-girlfriend, singer Casandra “Cassie” Ventura, identified in court documents as “Victim-1.” Ventura is expected to take the stand in the coming weeks.
Combs has pleaded not guilty. His legal team, led by Marc Agnifilo and Brian Steel, contends that his sexual conduct—marked by consensual swinger activities and the hiring of escorts—does not amount to sex trafficking. They aim to reframe his relationship with Ventura as “mutually toxic,” though the presiding judge has expressed skepticism about that argument’s relevance.
Despite the serious charges, Combs appeared composed in court, supported by family members including his mother, Janice Combs, and several of his children. His publicist described him as “upbeat” and ready to share his truth.
The trial, expected to last approximately eight weeks, has drawn intense public and media scrutiny. Once a defining figure in hip-hop—credited with launching the careers of The Notorious B.I.G. and others—Combs’ legacy now faces a legal reckoning. His current trial follows a wave of legal troubles, including Ventura’s 2023 civil lawsuit (settled out of court) and more than 70 other civil allegations of sexual assault.
