Chance The Rapper Headed to Trial After Judge Denies Request to Dismiss Lawsuit by Former Manager Pat Corcoran

Chance The Rapper is set to face his former manager, Pat Corcoran, in court after a judge denied his request to dismiss a lawsuit filed by Corcoran in 2020. The lawsuit stems from a dispute over unpaid commissions following the end of their nearly eight-year working relationship in April 2020.
Corcoran filed a lawsuit later that year, seeking $3 million in unpaid commissions. He claims that the two had a verbal agreement that Chance would continue to pay him commissions for three years after their professional relationship ended. In response, Chance argued that this verbal agreement violated Illinois’ ‘Statute of Frauds,’ which mandates that contracts lasting more than a year be in writing. However, the judge ruled against him, confirming that the case will proceed to trial.
Chance’s legal team issued a statement expressing their disagreement with the ruling. “We respectfully believe that the Court incorrectly denied summary judgment, as there is no legal or factual basis for Mr. Corcoran or his entity to obtain additional compensation from Mr. Bennett or his entities for a full three years after Mr. Corcoran was fired,” they said. “Mr. Bennett looks forward to further demonstrating at trial that this claim by his disgruntled former manager is entirely meritless.”
This lawsuit is just one part of the ongoing legal battle between Chance and Corcoran. In 2021, Chance countersued Corcoran, accusing him of sabotaging a deal with United Masters and criticizing Corcoran’s early position in the music industry. Chance’s legal team continues to argue that Corcoran has been fully compensated under their management contract and that his lawsuit is “groundless.”
With the trial now set, both sides will have the opportunity to present their cases, and Chance’s team remains confident that the legal system will ultimately reveal the truth behind their complex relationship.
