Universal Music Group Files 144-Page Motion To Dismiss Drake’s Texas Petition

Universal Music Group (UMG) is pushing back against Drake’s defamation lawsuit, filing a 144-page motion to dismiss the case. UMG has rejected the rapper’s allegations of misconduct, labeling his legal actions as “retaliatory” and accusing him of attempting to limit the distribution of the track “Not Like Us.”
The label’s motion requests not only the dismissal of the lawsuit but also the suspension of discovery and legal fees, signaling their unwillingness to bear the financial burden of Drake’s claims. UMG’s lawyer, Nicholas Crowley, argued that the lawsuit is part of a “strategic legal retaliation” by Drake, aimed at the company and others.
The motion was filed just days before a scheduled hearing on January 28th in Bexar County, Texas. UMG was recently granted a 34-day extension to respond to the case, citing disruptions caused by the Los Angeles wildfires, despite the lawsuit being filed in Texas. “We request this extension because wildfires in Los Angeles have greatly impacted [the] defendant’s executive and legal teams,” Crowley stated.
Drake’s lawsuit, which accuses UMG of defamation and more, revolves around their handling of the song “Not Like Us.” The case is expected to continue on March 17th, setting the stage for a contentious legal battle between the Toronto superstar and one of the biggest players in the music industry.
