Southwest Airlines to Begin Charging for Checked Bags Starting May 28, 2025
Southwest Airlines, renowned for its over 50-year tradition of offering free checked bags, will soon charge for the first and second checked bags, effective May 28, 2025. This marks a significant departure from one of the airline’s most well-known perks, driven by pressure from an activist investor and a shift in its business strategy.
Although Southwest has yet to announce the exact fees, the change is expected to generate additional revenue, particularly since the airline handles a higher volume of checked baggage than many of its competitors. This move follows recent changes in the airline’s offerings, such as the introduction of assigned seating, premium seats, and red-eye flights, bringing it closer in line with traditional carriers.
The decision has sparked mixed reactions. Some view it as a necessary step to adapt to financial pressures, while others worry it could alienate loyal customers who have long valued Southwest’s free baggage policy. As the airline evolves, the impact of this change remains to be seen.
