Samuel Monroe Jr. Dead At 52: ‘Menace II Society’ Actor Dies After Months-Long Hospitalization

Samuel Monroe Jr., the actor known for appearances in “Menace II Society,” “Tales from the Hood,” “Set It Off” and “The Players Club,” has died at 52.

His mother, Joyce Patton, announced his passing in a Facebook post, thanking friends and family who had been praying for her son and asking them to continue praying for his three children and the rest of the family.

“Today God called him home,” Patton wrote.

Monroe had reportedly been hospitalized for months after developing complications from meningitis, which later led to MRSA pneumonia. His family previously revealed that he had been placed on life support.

Before Monroe’s death, his mother had also gone to court seeking a conservatorship over her son. In the filing, Patton questioned the circumstances surrounding Monroe’s marriage to Shawna Stewart and sought authority over his affairs.

Patton alleged that Monroe had been living with her before his hospitalization and questioned Stewart’s involvement in his care and finances.

Stewart disputed those allegations, claiming Patton was attempting to gain control of Monroe’s finances. She had also launched a GoFundMe campaign to help with his medical expenses.

The family dispute adds another painful layer to the actor’s final months, but Monroe’s legacy will ultimately be remembered through the work he left behind.

Monroe earned his first on-screen acting credit in the 1993 classic “Menace II Society.”

He went on to appear in several beloved films from the ‘90s and 2000s, including “Tales from the Hood,” “Don’t Be a Menace to South Central While Drinking Your Juice in the Hood,” “Set It Off” and “The Players Club.”

For fans of Black cinema, his work remains part of an era that produced some of the most recognizable urban films and characters of its generation.
