R. Kelly Seeks Release from Federal Prison, Claims Aryan Brotherhood Was Recruited by Prison Staff to Kill Him

R. Kelly’s legal team is demanding his release from federal prison, claiming that Bureau of Prisons (BOP) officials have orchestrated multiple attempts on his life by enlisting members of the Aryan Brotherhood to murder him inside FCI Butner, the North Carolina facility where the disgraced R&B singer is currently serving a 30-year sentence.
According to an explosive emergency motion obtained by AllHipHop, attorney Beau B. Brindley alleges that BOP staff conspired with violent white supremacist gang members to kill Kelly, violating his constitutional rights and endangering his life in what the legal team calls a “murder-for-hire plot within the prison system.”
One of the alleged would-be assassins is Mikeal Glenn Stine, an inmate with terminal cancer and a documented history of violent crimes. Brindley claims Stine was transferred to Butner with a direct order: assassinate Kelly. But instead of carrying out the hit, Stine reportedly confessed the plot to Kelly himself.
“He was prepared to carry out the execution. But, in the moment when Stine got near Mr. Kelly, he made a different choice,” Brindley wrote in the filing. “He told him the truth. Stine told Kelly that he was sent to kill him. He told him how and by who… and as a dying man with a long history of murder and violence in his past, Stine decided not to carry out his order.”
Stine allegedly implicated prison official “Childress” and accused the BOP of systemic violence, claiming their agents had long used inmates to carry out hits. He and another Aryan Brotherhood member, David Keith Harris, both say they were approached to poison Kelly and are willing to testify and take polygraph tests.
“This means that at least two avowed white supremacists… have been approached by BOP officers and directed to take Mr. Kelly’s life,” Brindley added. “The one who failed to do so has now had his own life threatened.”
In addition to these grave accusations, Kelly’s legal team is also alleging serious misconduct involving witness tampering and illegal surveillance. According to the motion, a BOP staffer named Tawana Ingraham illegally accessed Kelly’s emails and phone calls, which were then funneled to a government informant, Larry McGee. McGee later bragged in online videos about using the stolen information to manipulate witnesses against Kelly.
Another inmate, Kishan Modugumudi—who once shared a cell with Kelly—admitted in a signed statement that he was instructed by a federal prosecutor to steal Kelly’s legal mail. After Kelly’s team obtained that statement, a prison official allegedly warned the singer that his life was in “immediate danger.”
Taken together, the filing argues, the threats to Kelly’s life and the documented misconduct by prison officials and prosecutors should justify his release to home confinement while he continues to appeal his convictions.
Kelly was convicted in 2022 on federal sex trafficking and racketeering charges and transferred to FCI Butner shortly thereafter. His attorneys claim the current conditions are not only unconstitutional but deadly.
The court has not yet issued a ruling on the emergency motion.
