Howard Grads Lawrence Blackmon & Roger Roman Launch AI Justice-Tech Startup “LegalEase” to Fast-Track Record Expungements—No Lawyer Needed
Meet Lawrence Blackmon and Roger Roman, two African American entrepreneurs who both graduated from Howard University, and are now the founders of LegalEase, a Black-owned justice-tech startup using AI to help people discover expungement eligibility and file court petitions in as little as five minutes—no attorney required.
Already live in Mississippi, LegalEase plans to expand into Illinois and the DC/Maryland corridor later this fall, with a state-by-state rollout that will cover the entire country within 18 months.
With 70 million Americans carrying criminal records that block opportunities for jobs, housing, and more, LegalEase is replacing the traditional months-long, expensive legal process with a simple conversation—available by phone, web chat, or SMS.
“Too many neighbors have waited years for a second chance,” said Blackmon. “By letting folks call, click, or text their way to a clean slate, we’re proving that equal justice can scale—from Jackson today to every zip code in America tomorrow.”
Roman added, “Clearing a record should be as routine as paying a bill online. Text Wilma, get your answer, file the paperwork, and move forward. When a five-minute chat opens doors across the country, the system is finally working for everyone.”
Key Features of LegalEase:
- Nationwide Rollout: Mississippi live now; new states every quarter, full U.S. coverage by early 2027.
- Multi-Channel Access: Voice, web chat, and SMS—accessible from anywhere.
- AI Legal Guide “Wilma”: Real-time eligibility checks based on each state’s laws.
- Affordable Options: $150 for DIY filing, $500 for concierge service.
- Case Tracking: Updates from submission to judicial approval.
- Community Outreach: “Expungement Express” clinics starting September.
