The hip-hop world is in mourning after news broke that John Forté, the Grammy-nominated artist best known for his work with The Fugees, has passed away.

TMZ confirmed that Forté died Monday at his home in Chilmark, Massachusetts, a town located on Martha’s Vineyard, according to Chilmark Police Chief Sean Slavin. Authorities say his death was sudden, and while the cause remains unclear, police have stated that no foul play is suspected.

John Forté carved his name into hip-hop history through his major contributions to The Fugees’ iconic 1996 album The Score, which went on to win the Grammy for Best Rap Album. He appeared on standout tracks like “Family Business” and “Cowboys,” and also co-wrote and produced several songs on the landmark project.

Lauryn Hill was the one who introduced Forté to the group, and after hearing his music, Wyclef Jean and Pras were so impressed they tapped him to anchor “Cowboys,” a move that cemented his place in Fugees lore.

Forté continued working closely with Wyclef, appearing on tracks from Wyclef Jean Presents The Carnival in 1997, including “We Trying to Stay Alive” and “Street Jeopardy.” Wyclef later produced Forté’s 1998 debut album, Poly Sci.

However, Forté’s rising career was derailed in 2000 when he was arrested at Newark International Airport and later convicted on federal drug conspiracy charges. He received a mandatory minimum 14-year sentence, ultimately serving seven years before his sentence was commuted in 2008 by then-President George W. Bush.

After his release, Forté returned to music and creative work, including writing “Something to Lean On,” which became the Brooklyn Nets’ intro theme song during their inaugural 2012–2013 season.

In his personal life, Forté found peace and family. He met his wife Lara Fuller on Martha’s Vineyard in 2015. The couple married and welcomed two children — daughter Wren and son Haile.

John Forté was 50 years old.

🕊️ Rest in Power.
