Floyd Mayweather Files $100M Lawsuit Against Business Insider For Biased Reporting and Defamation

Boxing legend and real estate mogul Floyd Mayweather is speaking out for the first time about his massive $100 million lawsuit against Business Insider and journalist David Geiger—and he’s not holding back.

During a panel at TheRealDeal’s NYC Forum 2025, Mayweather initially took the stage to talk about his expanding real estate empire. But when the topic shifted to his ongoing legal battle with the media outlet, he delivered a passionate explanation of why he felt compelled to take action.

“I’ve never sued a media outlet,” Mayweather said. “The media outlets throughout my life has bashed me, talked bad about me, talked bad about my family. I’ve always been judged because of how I present myself when promoting a fight. Judge me for the person that you know. You can’t judge me if you don’t know me.”

At the center of the lawsuit is a Business Insider article that questioned the legitimacy of Mayweather’s claim that he purchased a $500 million real estate portfolio, stating there was “no evidence” such a deal occurred. Mayweather says the report not only damaged his reputation but also threatened the future of his business dealings.

“Someone is going out there putting lies on my name, putting lies on me and my team, hurting my business,” Mayweather continued. “We’re not talking about millions. We’re talking about billions of dollars.”

He clarified this is the first time he has ever filed a lawsuit against a media company, emphasizing the seriousness of the situation:

“This is my first time ever filing a lawsuit ever against a media company for speaking bad about my company. I’m not a liar. I’m a lot of things, but I’m not a liar.”

Mayweather also took a moment to shut down the long-running speculation about his finances.

“If we call having two private jets, owning a hundred buildings, and being able to do what you want bankrupt, then I’m pretty sure everybody wants to live like that.”

Known for his lavish lifestyle and undefeated boxing record, Mayweather has spent recent years building a business legacy, particularly in real estate. This lawsuit marks a new chapter—one that reveals just how protective he is of that image.
