Doechii Makes History as Third Woman to Win Best Rap Album at 2025 GRAMMYs

Doechii made history at the 2025 GRAMMY Awards by becoming the third woman to win the prestigious Best Rap Album category. Her breakthrough album, Alligator Bites Never Heal, triumphed over projects from rap legends such as Common, Pete Rock, Eminem, Future & Metro Boomin, and J. Cole, solidifying her place among hip-hop’s elite.
During her emotional acceptance speech, Doechii took a moment to inspire young Black girls watching, saying, “I know there is some Black girl out there [watching,] and I want to tell you that you can do it. Anything is possible. Don’t allow anybody to project any stereotypes onto you. You are exactly who you need to be where you are, and I am a testimony to that.” Her words resonated deeply, especially as she followed in the groundbreaking footsteps of Lauryn Hill, who won as part of the Fugees in 1996, and Cardi B, who became the first female solo rapper to win in 2019 with Invasion of Privacy. Cardi B was present to present Doechii with her award, passing the torch to the next trailblazing female artist.
In addition to her Best Rap Album win, Doechii was nominated for Best New Artist and Best Rap Performance for her hit “Nissan Altima.” She also delivered a powerful and dramatic performance during the ceremony, including a rendition of “Denial Is a River,” which she described as one of the most challenging performances of her career. “It was one of the most difficult performances I’ve done, and I really felt the need to push myself harder than I ever have before,” she explained. “It really meant everything to me to prove myself tonight. To me, it was about Broadway and theater and art, and I think I brought that to the stage.”
Doechii’s historic win and powerful message have set the stage for a new chapter in her career, inspiring the next generation of artists and proving that anything is possible.
