It’s officially over between Amerie and Lenny Nicholson.

During a candid moment at the 2025 BET Awards weekend, R&B singer Amerie confirmed that she and her husband of over a decade, Lenny Nicholson, are going through a divorce after being separated since 2023.

The “Why Don’t We Fall In Love” hitmaker shared the news during a live conversation on Way Up with Angela Yee, where she was joined by fellow artists Muni Long and Jasmine Linford. While discussing life and love, Angela Yee casually commented on how Amerie had “been locked in for a long time,” seemingly referencing her marriage. Amerie responded quickly: “I was, but not now,” subtly revealing the split.

As the group reacted with surprise, Amerie added simply, “Divorced.”

While the announcement caught many fans off guard, Amerie explained that she had already mentioned the separation during a prior appearance on The Joe Budden Podcast, saying the topic came up naturally during their discussion. “I only mentioned it with Joe. I told him about it. We talked about it. It came up inadvertently,” she said.

Amerie went on to share that the decision to divorce followed a quiet period of separation, which began in 2023.

Amerie and Lenny Nicholson’s relationship began in the music industry. Nicholson, a former Sony Music executive and Amerie’s manager, began dating the singer in 2007. The couple tied the knot in an intimate island ceremony in 2011 and later welcomed their son, River Rowe Charles, in 2018.

Now, more than a decade later, their story is coming to an end—but Amerie remains reflective and grounded.

In a clip from the BET weekend interview posted on Angela Yee’s YouTube channel, the singer shared her thoughts on love, growth, and knowing when to move forward.

“It’s been a couple of years since we’ve been separated,” she said, adding, “All the relationships that we have, I believe we have them because we’re supposed to learn something, and so everything is a blessing. You can be with someone where you stay the same. You can be with someone that can dim your light… or you can be with someone who amplifies you and who you amplify.”
