Aaliyah’s Brother Believes She Would Be The ‘Biggest Star In The World’ Today

January 16th was Aaliyah’s 46th birthday, and her legacy continues to live on in the hearts of many. Even after her tragic passing in 2001, fans and family alike remember the “Princess of R&B” as one of the most talented and influential artists of her generation.
Aaliyah’s brother, Rashad Haughton, recently spoke to PEOPLE about the lasting impact his sister had, not only on the music world but on him personally. “I do often talk to her in times of trouble, or when I’m really missing her,” Haughton shared. “I talk to her in my heart, in my mind, in my dreams.”
Reflecting on what he would say to her now, he added, “I love you, and I’m so proud of you, and let’s enjoy this together.” Haughton spoke lovingly of Aaliyah’s influence, imagining the joy she’d have from her ongoing recognition. “I know you’re smiling,” he said. “Let’s hold this doll. Let’s share it with everyone, let’s listen to ‘One in a Million’ and listen to all the fans and their reactions.”
To honor Aaliyah’s timeless influence, Haughton collaborated with Barbie for the release of a special Aaliyah doll, which sold out on her birthday. The doll, dressed in black leather, is a tribute to her iconic “One in a Million” video look. On Instagram, Barbie celebrated Aaliyah’s enduring legacy: “A rising star who left an unforgettable mark on pop culture, the Aaliyah Barbie doll remembers her iconic style, keeping her influence alive across generations.”
For Haughton, Aaliyah’s birthday is a time to reflect on her voice and the joy she brought to everyone around her. “Her voice is so angelic. One of the most beautiful voices I have ever heard, still to this day,” he said. He also recalled her warmth, saying she was always caring to the people around her, from her team to her fans.
And while Haughton still deeply misses his sister, he finds comfort in knowing that Aaliyah’s spirit lives on in her music and through moments like this. “I can see her playing with these dolls wherever she is right now, which I know is heaven and in a beautiful place,” he said, adding that she would likely be dancing to her hits with her doll by her side.
Aaliyah may no longer be here, but her legacy — filled with music, love, and lasting influence — continues to shine brightly.
