‘Power’ Universe Expands With Two New Spinoffs in Development at Starz, Including ‘Power: Legacy’ With Tommy and Tariq Reuniting

As Starz intensifies its push to develop fully owned original IP following its separation from Lionsgate, the premium network is doubling down on one of its most successful franchises: Power. While Starz continues its long-standing relationship with Lionsgate Television for the Power brand, Deadline has exclusively learned that not one but two new spinoffs are currently in development, signaling the franchise’s ambitious next chapter.
The first project, currently untitled but internally referred to as Power: Legacy, reunites key talent behind Power Book IV: Force—executive producers Gary Lennon and Kendra Chapman. Lennon, who also served as showrunner on Force, is set to lead the writers’ room for this new series, which sources say will open soon.
Plot details remain under wraps, but Power: Legacy is expected to be set in the present day, with Joseph Sikora and Michael Rainey Jr. reprising their iconic roles as Tommy Egan and Tariq St. Patrick, respectively. The series is believed to pick up following the events of Force, which is wrapping with its upcoming third and final season, and Power Book II: Ghost, which concluded last year. The setup opens the door for crossover storytelling—potentially taking place in Chicago, New York City, or even a brand-new locale. Notably, executive producer Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson has previously teased interest in expanding the franchise globally, possibly setting a new series in London.
The second spinoff, Power: Origins, has been in development since 2023 and will serve as a prequel to the original Power series. It’s set in the aftermath of Power Book III: Raising Kanan, and follows the formative years of Ghost and Tommy, played by Omari Hardwick and Joseph Sikora in the original series. Showrunner Sascha Penn, who also helmed Raising Kanan, is leading the prequel’s development, with its writers’ room already up and running. Sources indicate the project has strong prospects of being greenlit.
Penn hinted at what fans can expect during a recent interview with Deadline, saying, “We’re in the lab on Origins right now, and we’re figuring that out and trying to see what it looks like, or what it could look like… Ghost and Tommy start to appear in Kanan’s life sometime fairly soon.”
The Season 4 finale of Raising Kanan introduced Shameik Moore as Branford ‘Breeze’ Frady, the nephew of drug kingpins Snaps (Wendell Pierce) and Pop (Erika Woods). Breeze is a pivotal figure in Power lore, having mentored Ghost, Tommy, and Kanan before his eventual murder by Ghost—an act that later influences Tariq to kill his own father. With Breeze now onscreen, the prequel is primed to explore the origins of this tragic criminal dynasty.
If greenlit, Power: Origins would become the franchise’s fourth spinoff, following Power Book II: Ghost, Power Book III: Raising Kanan (which has a fifth and final season already filmed), and Power Book IV: Force. The flagship series, Power, ran for six seasons and laid the foundation for what is now one of Starz’s most valuable properties.
The ongoing expansion of the Power universe reflects Starz’s broader strategic model. CEO Jeff Hirsch explained the company’s approach last year: “You look at the [Power] map and say, ‘OK, if I take one of those characters out and spin one of those out, I can bring that on to replace the Power show at half the cost.’”
Alongside Power, Starz continues to build on other legacy IPs like Outlander, which returns with its prequel Blood of My Blood on August 8, and the Spartacus revival House of Ashur, debuting later this year.
The Power franchise is executive produced by series creator Courtney A. Kemp under her End of Episode banner, Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson via G-Unit Film and Television, and Mark Canton of Canton Entertainment. The studio behind all installments remains Lionsgate Television, ensuring continuity even as Starz shifts to developing more content in-house.
With fresh blood, legacy characters, and international possibilities on the horizon, the Power universe shows no signs of slowing down.
