Joe Biden Diagnosed with Aggressive Prostate Cancer That Has Spread to Bones

Former President Joe Biden has been diagnosed with an aggressive form of prostate cancer that has metastasized to his bones, according to a statement from his personal office released Sunday.

The 82-year-old was evaluated last week after experiencing increasing urinary symptoms. A new prostate nodule was identified, and subsequent testing confirmed a diagnosis of prostate cancer with a Gleason score of 9 (Grade Group 5) — indicating a highly aggressive form of the disease.

“While this represents a more aggressive form of the disease, the cancer appears to be hormone-sensitive which allows for effective management,” the statement read.

Biden and his family are currently consulting with medical professionals to determine the best course of treatment. He is spending the weekend at his home in Wilmington, Delaware.

The news follows a recent update from Biden’s team that a “small nodule” had been detected, prompting further evaluation.

Biden’s health has long been a topic of public conversation, particularly during his presidency, where concerns around age and cognitive acuity intensified — especially following a widely criticized debate performance against Donald Trump in June 2024.

During a February 2024 physical at Walter Reed, President Biden’s physician, Dr. Kevin O’Connor, reported no new health issues and stated that Biden remained “fit for duty” at the time.

Though Biden has largely kept a low profile since leaving office, he has slowly begun to reappear in public. Earlier this month, he made an appearance on ABC’s The View, firmly denying claims of cognitive decline: “They are wrong,” Biden said. “There is nothing to sustain [those claims].”

Further details about his treatment plan or prognosis have not yet been disclosed.
