Shedeur Sanders Drafted by Cleveland Browns

In a surprising turn during the 2025 NFL Draft, the Cleveland Browns selected quarterback Shedeur Sanders with the 144th overall pick in the fifth round, concluding a dramatic slide for the highly touted prospect.
Sanders, son of NFL Hall of Famer Deion Sanders, entered the draft with expectations of being a first- or second-round pick. Despite a stellar collegiate career at Jackson State and Colorado, where he set records and earned accolades such as the Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year in 2024, he was the sixth quarterback selected, following players like Cam Ward and Dillon Gabriel. Analysts attribute his unexpected fall to concerns over his high sack rate, questions about his arm strength, and the perception that his success was closely tied to playing under his father’s coaching.
The Browns traded up to acquire Sanders, sending their 166th and 192nd picks to the Eagles to secure the 144th selection. This move came after the team had already drafted quarterback Dillon Gabriel in the third round, adding depth to a quarterback room that includes Deshaun Watson (recovering from injury), Joe Flacco, and Kenny Pickett.
Sanders’ college career was marked by impressive statistics and leadership. In 2024, he threw for 4,134 yards and 37 touchdowns, leading Colorado to a 9-4 season. Over his collegiate tenure, he amassed 14,327 passing yards and 134 touchdowns, setting an NCAA record for career completion percentage at 71.8%.
With Deshaun Watson sidelined due to injury, the Browns’ quarterback competition is open. Sanders will vie for playing time against Gabriel, Pickett, and Flacco. Analysts have praised the Browns’ selection of Sanders as a potential steal, noting his accuracy and decision-making skills. CBS Sports awarded the pick an A+ grade, highlighting the value of acquiring a player of Sanders’ caliber in the fifth round.
As Sanders embarks on his NFL journey, he carries the legacy of his father and the expectations of Browns fans eager for a resurgence at the quarterback position.
