Shannon Sharpe Temporarily Steps Down from ESPN Amid Sexual Assault Lawsuit

Shannon Sharpe, Pro Football Hall of Famer and ESPN analyst, announced today that he is temporarily stepping away from his duties at ESPN to address a civil lawsuit filed against him in Nevada. The lawsuit, filed by a woman under the pseudonym “Jane Doe,” accuses Sharpe of sexual assault, battery, and other misconduct during their nearly two-year relationship.
In a statement shared on his social media platforms, Sharpe asserted that the relationship in question was “100% consensual” and described the allegations as “false and disruptive.” He stated:
“At this juncture, I am electing to step aside temporarily from my ESPN duties. I will be devoting this time to my family and responding to these allegations. I plan to return to ESPN at the start of the NFL preseason.”
Sharpe’s attorney, Lanny J. Davis, has publicly denied the allegations, calling the lawsuit a “blatant and cynical attempt to shake down Mr. Sharpe for millions of dollars.” Davis released a series of text messages purportedly from the plaintiff, suggesting the relationship was consensual and challenging the credibility of the claims.
The lawsuit seeks over $50 million in damages and includes allegations that Sharpe recorded sexual encounters without consent and engaged in controlling and abusive behavior.
ESPN has not issued an official statement regarding Sharpe’s temporary departure. However, Stephen A. Smith, Sharpe’s co-host on “First Take,” addressed the situation on his personal show, indicating that ESPN is taking the matter seriously and is conducting a thorough review.
Sharpe joined ESPN’s “First Take” in 2023 after co-hosting FS1’s “Undisputed” with Skip Bayless for seven years. He also hosts the popular podcast “Club Shay Shay.”
As the legal proceedings unfold, Sharpe has expressed gratitude for the support he has received from fans, colleagues, and family. He remains committed to clearing his name and returning to his broadcasting duties in time for the upcoming NFL season.
