“Big U” Pleads Not Guilty to Federal Racketeering Charges

Eugene Henley Jr., widely known as “Big U,” pleaded not guilty Tuesday to a slate of federal charges tied to a sweeping racketeering indictment unveiled last month. Appearing in a downtown Los Angeles courtroom for his arraignment, Henley entered a not guilty plea to all counts. His trial is set to begin on May 20, and if convicted, he could face life in prison.
Federal prosecutors allege Henley led what they describe as the “Big U Enterprise,” a criminal organization that used his influence—including alleged connections to the Rollin’ 60s Crips and other gangs—to orchestrate crimes across Los Angeles. The indictment includes charges of murder, extortion, robbery, sex trafficking, fraud, illegal gambling, and more.
Henley has publicly denied the accusations, taking to social media shortly after the indictment was unsealed on March 19. “I ain’t been nothing but a help to our community,” he said. “But, I guess it is what it is. This is the price of being Black and trying to help your community.”
The 26-count indictment includes charges under the RICO Act, Hobbs Act violations, Mann Act infractions, wire and bank fraud, embezzlement from federally funded programs, and tax-related offenses.
U.S. Attorney Joseph McNally underscored the gravity of the charges in a public statement: “As the indictment alleges, Mr. Henley led a criminal enterprise whose conduct ranged from murder to sophisticated fraud that included stealing from taxpayers and a charity. Today’s charges… will make our neighborhoods in Los Angeles safer.”
Henley, long known for both his past gang ties and more recent community outreach work, has played a visible role in anti-violence efforts and youth mentorship in Los Angeles. As the case moves forward, it’s expected to draw national attention, spotlighting the complex intersection of crime, influence, and community leadership.
