Drake Scores Legal Win in Battle Against Universal Music Group

In a significant development in his ongoing legal battle with Universal Music Group (UMG), Drake recently secured a major victory in court. The rapper had filed a lawsuit against the label earlier this year, accusing UMG of artificially inflating the success of Kendrick Lamar’s diss track, Not Like Us. Drake claims that this tactic propagated a “false and malicious” narrative about him, alleging that it painted him as an “alleged pedophile.”
The latest twist in the case occurred earlier this month when UMG filed a motion to stay discovery, seeking to delay the release of sensitive internal documents, including Kendrick Lamar’s contract. However, today in court, Judge Jeannette Vargas rejected UMG’s request, stating that the motion lacked sufficient grounds. “I cannot find on that basis that a stay of discovery is warranted,” Judge Vargas said, adding that UMG could object to individual requests but that the discovery process would proceed.
Michael Gottlieb, Drake’s attorney, wasted no time in responding to UMG’s motion. He criticized the label’s attempt to delay the discovery process, suggesting that it was indicative of the label trying to conceal crucial evidence. “It is unsurprising that UMG is desperate to avoid discovery,” Gottlieb stated. “This motion is a ploy to delay producing documents and communications that UMG hopes to keep hidden and buried. If UMG has nothing to hide, it should not have an issue with discovery.”
With today’s ruling, Drake’s legal team is now poised to further investigate UMG’s internal dealings. In a statement following the court’s decision, Gottlieb declared, “Now it’s time to see what UMG was so desperately trying to hide.”
This courtroom victory comes amidst new reports that UMG is set to partner with the e-commerce platform SendOwl. This collaboration, which allows UMG to sell and report digital products directly through their own online stores, has raised suspicions among Drake’s fanbase about the fairness and transparency within the music industry.
As the case moves forward, all eyes are on the upcoming motion to dismiss hearing, scheduled for June 30, as well as the broader implications of this legal clash on the music business.
