Marvin Sapp Responds to Backlash Over Viral “Close the Doors” Offering Video

Marvin Sapp is addressing the backlash following the viral resurfacing of a video showing him instructing church ushers to “close the doors” during an offering at a Pentecostal event. The video, filmed in July 2024 at the 109th Pentecostal Assemblies of the World Convention in Baltimore, sparked controversy after going viral this week.
In the clip, the 58-year-old Grammy-nominated gospel singer and pastor is seen on stage telling ushers to “close the doors” before encouraging the congregation—both in person and online—to give $20 each, aiming for a $40,000 total.
In response to the criticism, Sapp took to Facebook on March 26 to provide context. He clarified that while he did ask the crowd to give, he also encouraged church leadership to lead by example by giving $100. “That evening, I personally gave much more,” he added.
Explaining his firm directive to close the doors, Sapp emphasized that it wasn’t about “holding people hostage” but ensuring a “safe, focused, and reverent environment” for those giving. He stated that the goal was to avoid distractions during the offering and create a space for “sacred exchange.”
Sapp also highlighted the financial responsibilities tied to conferences and churches, noting, “As the assigned ministerial gift for this international gathering, one of my responsibilities was to help raise the conference budget. That’s not manipulation, it’s stewardship.” He pointed to the biblical example in 1 Chronicles 29, where King David challenges the people to give for the building of the temple, stressing that it’s about commitment to the vision and stewardship, not manipulation.
Sapp concluded by urging people to understand the broader context behind the moment, reaffirming his commitment to honor and clarity in his ministry.
