Yolanda Saldivar Denied Early Release from Prison in Selena’s Murder Case

Yolanda Saldivar, the woman convicted of murdering Tejano music icon Selena Quintanilla-Perez in 1995, was denied early release from prison on Thursday, March 27. The Texas Board of Pardons and Parole made the decision following a thorough review of her case, which included confidential interviews and a review of her criminal history.
Saldivar, 64, was convicted of murder with a deadly weapon and sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole after 30 years. Her parole eligibility date is set for March 30, 2025, but the parole panel determined that Saldivar’s release would pose a “continuing threat to public safety” due to the nature of the offense.
The 1995 murder occurred after Selena’s family fired Saldivar from her position as the manager of Selena’s boutiques and fan club, following accusations of embezzlement. On March 31, 1995, during a meeting to retrieve business records, Saldivar shot Selena in the back as the singer attempted to flee. Despite collapsing in a hotel lobby, Selena identified Saldivar as her attacker before succumbing to her injuries.
Saldivar’s family has expressed support for her release, claiming she has served enough time. However, the parole board’s decision emphasizes the violent nature of the crime, with the panel citing her “assaultive behavior” and disregard for the safety of others.
Carlos Valdez, the prosecutor in the case, has strongly opposed Saldivar’s parole, stating that her release would be a “serious mistake” and that she remains a danger to society.
Saldivar’s next parole review is scheduled for March 2030.
