The hip hop world is mourning the loss of legendary rapper Rob Base, who has reportedly passed away at the age of 59 following a private battle with cancer.

Born Robert Ginyard, the iconic MC died peacefully on Friday surrounded by loved ones — just days after celebrating his birthday. His family confirmed the heartbreaking news in an emotional social media tribute, remembering him as a devoted father, loyal friend and a creative visionary whose music helped shape hip hop culture forever.

Rob Base rose to worldwide fame alongside DJ E-Z Rock as the legendary duo behind the timeless 1988 smash hit It Takes Two. The energetic anthem became one of the most recognizable records in hip hop history and remains a party staple nearly four decades later.

The duo also delivered fan-favorite classics like Joy and Pain and “Get on the Dance Floor,” helping bridge rap music into mainstream pop culture during hip hop’s golden era.

Rob and E-Z Rock’s story started in Harlem, where the two met in elementary school before eventually building their music careers together from scratch. Their chemistry and upbeat sound made them pioneers during a time when rap music was still fighting for mainstream recognition.
