A wild Best Buy assault caught on camera has come to an end after authorities arrested 37-year-old Darren Richmond, the man seen pacing the aisles eating a bag of Cheetos before sucker-punching a shopper from behind and stealing his cellphone.

The incident went down Monday night around 7:50 p.m. at the Best Buy on La Brea Avenue in West Hollywood. Surveillance footage shows Richmond casually roaming the store, snacking, and sizing up the victim before launching a sudden, unprovoked punch to the back of the head. The blow sent the man crashing to the floor.

According to Sgt. Jeffrey Bishop, Richmond then scooped up the victim’s cellphone and ran out the store through the rear emergency exit.

The twist?

Richmond wasn’t even caught for the Best Buy robbery.

He was arrested the next day — Tuesday, May 22 — for an unrelated crime by the LAPD. But when detectives got a good look at him, they realized he strongly resembled the Best Buy attacker from the video released by the LA County Sheriff’s Department.

Detectives contacted the LASD West Hollywood Station, and after comparing details, they confirmed that the man in custody and the man in the viral surveillance video were one and the same.

Richmond is now facing charges for both the original LAPD arrest and the Best Buy sucker-punch robbery.

West Hollywood residents say the arrest brings relief, especially after the brazen nature of the attack — one carried out in a crowded store with zero hesitation.
