Keith Lee Turns His Midwest Food Tour Into a Mission, Mobilizing Thousands as Gary, Indiana Recovers From Historic Power Crisis

Keith Lee has built one of the most influential platforms in food, but his latest stop proved that his impact can extend far beyond restaurant reviews.

The viral food critic brought national attention to Gary, Indiana, after the Northwest Indiana community was hit hard by severe storms and a historic power crisis that left residents dealing with outages, damaged property, spoiled food and other challenges for days. Instead of simply continuing with business as usual as he prepared for his Midwest food tour, Lee turned his attention toward the people of Gary. What followed became a massive community effort.

Working alongside the City of Gary, The Salvation Army, Ace Hardware and Indiana Pacers star Tyrese Haliburton, Lee helped bring together resources for residents recovering from the storm. Lee contributed $15,000, while Haliburton matched his donation with another $15,000, bringing their combined commitment to $30,000. But money was only part of the story.

According to Lee, the relief effort came together in just two days, with more than 40 food trucks volunteering meals and services, hundreds of volunteers, more than 10 companies offering support and over 50 national media outlets reporting from the scene.

Thousands of residents ultimately showed up as food, household necessities, cleaning products and storm-recovery supplies were distributed throughout the community. Reports estimated that roughly 4,000 to 6,000 people attended the relief effort.

Lee also made sure the support reached residents who couldn’t necessarily make it to the massive gathering. During his time in Gary, he visited a senior living community and helped deliver hot meals directly to residents. And that’s what makes this moment bigger than another viral Keith Lee video.

Lee has amassed millions of followers by walking into restaurants, ordering food and giving viewers his unfiltered opinion. We’ve watched his reviews transform small businesses almost overnight, sending customers through their doors and changing the trajectories of family-owned restaurants.

Lee questioned why the situation in Gary hadn’t received more national attention while residents continued dealing with the aftermath of the storm. Gary is a predominantly Black city, making his decision to use his platform to amplify what residents were experiencing an even more significant part of the conversation. But Lee wasn’t interested in presenting himself as Gary’s savior.

He repeatedly credited the residents who had already been sharing their experiences online and bringing awareness to what was happening. His platform simply helped turn up the volume. And maybe that’s the bigger story here.

We talk constantly about followers, engagement, views and influence, particularly in today’s creator-driven culture. But Gary, Indiana offered another definition of influence: What can you actually move when people are paying attention to you? In two days, Keith Lee helped turn attention into action.

Food trucks came. Companies came. Volunteers came. National media came. Thousands of people were served. For a creator whose career started with sitting in his car and telling people whether their food was worth trying, that’s one hell of an evolution. Keith Lee didn’t just bring his food tour to Indiana.

This time, he brought the spotlight with him — and pointed it toward a community that wanted America to see them.
