Issa Rae Heads Back to HBO With New Half-Hour Comedy Exploring Male Friendship

Issa Rae is heading back to HBO with another story centered around friendship, culture and the relationships that shape our lives.

HBO has officially handed a pilot order to Rae’s new half-hour comedy, currently titled Untitled Male Friendship Show. The series will explore the complexities of male friendship against the backdrop of the Las Vegas boxing world.

The project marks another chapter in Rae’s longstanding relationship with HBO, the network that became home to her groundbreaking series Insecure. The Emmy-nominated comedy helped redefine how Black friendship, love, careers and adulthood could be portrayed on television, while establishing Rae as one of the industry’s most influential creative voices.

This time, Rae is turning the lens toward men.

The premise alone makes the project interesting. Pairing male friendship with the high-pressure world of boxing creates room to explore brotherhood, ambition, competition, vulnerability and what happens when loyalty is tested.

While a pilot order doesn’t guarantee a full series pickup, it puts Rae’s latest project one major step closer to HBO’s lineup — and considering the creative legacy she already built with the network, this is definitely one to watch.
