Nearly four decades after redefining R&B with her signature vocal layering, intricate harmonies, and unmatched riffs, Brandy Norwood is receiving one of the Recording Academy’s highest honors.

The legendary singer and actress — affectionately known as “The Vocal Bible” — will be presented with the prestigious Black Music Icon Award. The honor will be bestowed by the Recording Academy’s Black Music Collective during a special ceremony on January 29 at the Fairmont Century Plaza in Los Angeles, just days before the 2026 Grammy Awards.

Brandy’s influence on modern R&B is undeniable. From her groundbreaking self-titled debut album in the ’90s to her acting success and continued vocal innovation, she has inspired generations of artists who credit her harmonies and technique as foundational to today’s sound.

In a heartfelt statement, Brandy expressed gratitude for the recognition.

“So grateful and truly humbled to receive the Recording Academy’s Black Music Icon Award. This honor means more than words — standing on the shoulders of those who paved the way, and celebrating the legacy, resilience, and brilliance of Black music,” she shared. “Thank you to the Recording Academy for seeing me, supporting me, and honoring the journey.”
