Tyler Perry Steps In to Help 81-Year-Old Homeowner Facing Nearly $18K Lien After Insurance Dispute

Tyler Perry is once again using his platform and resources to step in when someone needs it most.

The 56-year-old filmmaker and media mogul has offered financial assistance to 81-year-old Brenda Daurham, an Illinois homeowner who says she was left displaced and facing nearly $18,000 in debt following extensive water damage inside the home she has lived in for more than four decades.

According to reports, Daurham’s nightmare began on Valentine’s Day when a pipe underneath her kitchen sink burst, sending water throughout portions of her Markham, Illinois home.

Daurham says she initially believed her homeowners insurance would cover the damage. She told FOX Chicago that after contacting her insurance company, she was under the impression that everything would be taken care of. However, the situation quickly became more complicated.

After Daurham hired Excel Fire and Water Damage Restoration Services to perform mitigation work, Allstate reportedly denied the insurance claim, citing policy exclusions related to “wear and tear,” “deterioration” and “seepage.”

The restoration company reportedly disputed that assessment, maintaining that the damage resulted from a “sudden and accidental plumbing failure.” With the insurance dispute unresolved and payment outstanding, Excel eventually filed a mechanic’s lien against Daurham’s property on Aug. 20 for $17,827.96, with potential additional interest, attorney’s fees and costs.

The financial and emotional toll became overwhelming for Daurham, who said she was unable to cover the nearly $18,000 expense herself and had even gone to the emergency room after experiencing severe stress over the situation. That’s when Tyler Perry stepped in.

According to PEOPLE, Perry is covering the nearly $18,000 mechanic’s lien and providing Daurham with an additional $25,000 to help her get back on her feet — bringing his reported assistance to more than $42,000. Perry also publicly addressed Daurham’s situation after seeing the local news report.

“This woman is 81 years old. You call this being in good hands?” Perry wrote before assuring her, “Don’t worry Ms. Daurham help is on the way.”

For Daurham, what began as a burst pipe turned into months of uncertainty surrounding the home she has spent more than 40 years in. Now, Perry’s intervention could give her something she desperately needed throughout the ordeal: relief.

Perry has built an entertainment empire, but moments like this continue to show that some of his biggest impact happens far away from a movie set.
