Gayle King Reveals She Caught Her Husband Cheating With Her Friend In Her Own House While Their Kids Was Home

Gayle King is opening up about one of the most painful moments of her life — discovering her now ex-husband cheating with one of her close friends while their children were home.

During a candid appearance on the Call Her Daddy podcast with Alex Cooper, the longtime CBS journalist shared shocking details about the affair that ultimately ended her marriage to William Bumpus.

Gayle explained that after her flight unexpectedly got canceled, she returned home early with her children only to notice the house alarm was activated even though her husband was supposedly alone.

According to King, Bumpus rushed out wearing only a towel and attempted to stop her from entering a room.

“He goes, ‘You can’t come in,’” Gayle recalled before saying she immediately became suspicious and started searching the house herself.

That’s when she says she discovered one of her friends hiding behind a door wrapped in one of her towels.

Gayle admitted the betrayal left her stunned and heartbroken, especially because the woman was someone her children knew closely enough to call “aunt.”

Things became even more chaotic when police arrived at the home after the alarm was triggered during the confrontation.

King also revealed her first phone call afterward was to her longtime best friend Oprah Winfrey, who encouraged her to confront the situation directly.

Despite attempting counseling and reconciliation at one point, Gayle eventually ended the marriage for good after realizing the trust was permanently broken.

She explained that the constant suspicion and anxiety changed who she was as a person.

“I didn’t like who I was,” she admitted. “Who wants to live like that?”
