🏀 Dwight Howard Announces Official Retirement From Basketball Amid Divorce Drama, Says It’s Time To Focus On Family
After nearly two decades in professional basketball, Dwight Howard has officially announced he’s stepping away from the game.
The former NBA superstar confirmed the news in a lengthy statement Thursday, explaining that while he still believes he has “gas left in the tank,” the sport ultimately made the decision for him — and now he’s shifting his focus to family and community.
Howard, who was the No. 1 overall pick in the 2004 NBA Draft, said many people assumed he had already retired since he hadn’t played in the NBA since the 2021–22 season. After that run, he continued playing overseas before deciding it was time to close the chapter on his playing career.
“DH12” thanked fans who supported him throughout his journey, while also acknowledging the critics who doubted him.
He even gave a shout-out to what he called the “naysayers, haters, and snakes,” saying their attempts to tear him down only made him stronger over the years.
During his legendary career, Howard became one of the most dominant centers of his generation. He built his reputation with the Orlando Magic, later playing for several franchises including the Los Angeles Lakers and the Houston Rockets.
His resume speaks for itself:
- 🏆 NBA Champion (2020) with the Lakers
- ⭐ 8-time NBA All-Star
- 🛡 3-time Defensive Player of the Year
- 📊 Career averages of 15.7 points, 11.8 rebounds, and 1.8 blocks per game over 18 seasons
Howard also made history by jumping straight from high school to the NBA, quickly becoming one of the league’s most feared defensive forces and a dominant presence in the paint.
However, the retirement news arrives during a turbulent time in his personal life.
Howard recently filed for divorce from his wife Amber Howard, also known as Amy Luciani, after she made several explosive allegations against him on social media. Reports also surfaced of 911 calls made by both sides, suggesting tensions between the couple had been escalating for days.
Despite the off-court drama, Howard appears focused on the next chapter of his life. In his retirement message, he hinted that fans will soon get a deeper look at his journey through an upcoming documentary project.
For now, the former All-Star says his priorities are clear — family, community, and life after basketball.
